Modulating the Verwey Transition of Epitaxial Magnetite Thin Films by Ionic Gating

Understanding the Verwey transition in magnetite (Fe3O4), a strongly correlated magnetic oxide, is one-century-old topic that recaptures great attention because of recent spectroscopy studies revealing its orbital details. Here, modulation by tuning configurations with ionic gating reported. In epitaxial thin films, insulating state can be tuned continuously to metallic showing low-temperature trimeron states controllably metalized both gate-induced oxygen vacancies and proton doping. The also reverse sign anomalous Hall coefficient, indicating metallization associated presence new type carrier competing spin. variable spin orientation reversal originated from structural distortions driven vacancies.
